Longtime Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has died at the age of 71 after what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness.” The announcement was made late Saturday, with the senator’s family requesting privacy while expressing gratitude for the prayers and support they have received.

President Donald Trump led the tributes, remembering Graham as a loyal friend, dedicated lawmaker, and “true American patriot.” In a message shared on social media, Trump praised Graham’s unwavering commitment to the country and said details regarding memorial arrangements would be announced later.

Messages of condolence quickly poured in from across Washington. Senate Majority Leader John Thune described Graham as a devoted public servant who firmly believed in America’s leadership on the global stage. He also praised the late senator’s lifelong commitment to strengthening U.S. national security and supporting democratic allies around the world.

Graham entered the U.S. Senate in 2003 after serving several terms in the House of Representatives. Before entering politics, he served as a lawyer in the U.S. Air Force. Throughout his congressional career, he became one of the Republican Party’s most recognizable voices on defense, foreign policy, and military affairs, consistently advocating for a strong American role in international affairs.

One of the most notable aspects of Graham’s political journey was the evolution of his relationship with Donald Trump. During the 2016 Republican presidential race, Graham was one of Trump’s harshest critics and openly questioned his suitability for the presidency. However, following Trump’s election victory, the two developed a close political alliance. Graham went on to become one of the president’s most trusted supporters and advisers, frequently standing by him on major domestic and foreign policy issues.

With Graham’s passing, the United States loses a veteran lawmaker whose influence shaped Republican politics and American foreign policy for more than two decades.
