After serving in the British Army’s air service for 27 years, the former bodyguard for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie still found working for the celebrity couple the most challenging job he had ever done. In an interview with The Sun in 2016, Mark Billingham spoke up about his time spent working with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The conversation happened in 2016.
Billingham oversaw Pitt and Jolie’s security and became close to the six kids they had together: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and Vivienne. Billingham told The Sun that “the military set me up perfectly for what I did with them.”
He claimed overprotective parents were cautious about who interacted with their kids. He said “Angie and Brad are very worried about who goes near their children.”
We had a great connection right away, and they trusted me to take good care of the kids because they could see it. Bellingham asserts that he had a close connection with the couple and that, while working for them, he even shared a home with them. He claims that by doing things like taking Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s kids swimming and watching them all day, he “fathered” the kids.
I was free to decide where I wanted to take the kids. I was the only one who could accomplish it, he continued. They wouldn’t allow other adults near the children, even when I tried to bring in more. Protecting his family was another of his duties since Bellingham was a common target for stalkers. He recalled one instance in particular, stating, “Angie was filming in a crowd and everyone was smiling except for one guy.” “He had an angry expression,”
A few days later, Bellingham recounted, “we were leaving the set, and this guy came running down the street with photos to be signed.” We were all delighted. I talked Angie out of getting out of the vehicle and finishing the work when she indicated a desire.
He said that when he gave Jolie the pictures of the gentleman to sign, she realized these were private photographs the man had given her. The suspect fled, but Bellingham was able to apprehend him when he was discovered nearby Jolie’s hotel a few days later. The former bodyguard said, “he had been stalking Angie all over the States.”
Bellingham’s job included ensuring the family and their kids always gave the public a favorable impression. If any clothes were dirty or wrinkled beyond repair, he was responsible for transporting extra clothes and bringing them to the household. He said that I had to make sure that their image was safeguarded, that they were appropriately attired, and that they weren’t acting foolishly in a way that may be captured on video.
Bellingham said that since Jolie was the “tough one” in the relationship, she would be more suited to withstand his Special Air Service training than the Fight Club actor. It seems Angelina Jolie successfully prepared for her part as the Tomb Raider.
However, Bellingham thinks that the duo sometimes showed a lack of social skills and common sense. “When they would ask me questions like, ‘How do I go down to that bar?’ and ‘What do I need to do to get there?’ I thought it was absolutely ridiculous.” He says, “They’re not stupid, but because of the world they live in, they just haven’t done something like that for such a long time.” That struck me as odd.
